Although at an extremely inconvenient time, I am very pleased to say we have been able to make changes in response to parent and student feedback. We have had multiple parents and students express that our lunch hour is too short and students are on their busses very early in the morning.
In response, we as a staff have decided to eliminate our advisory/homeroom block to allow us to lengthen our lunch hour and to accommodate a later start to the day. Our instructional minutes do not change.
With a longer lunchtime, students will still have time to access teachers for extra help should it be required and those who prefer to complete homework at school will have more time to do so. As well, with a later start time accessing before school help looks a little more appealing! Younger students will have time to warm up their meals as well as eat! This extended break also means they have a bit of time to do homework, to read or to just take some down time before classes start up again.
We had difficulty getting the software needed to make these changes and out of nowhere, the technician arrived today. We had not expected this change to take place so quickly and without notice but here we are - new bell times as of 1:15 today. Our preference was to give at least an advanced warning. For that, we apologize, but there is a level of surprise for us all.
Although the bells have been changed, we fully understand it will take time to make appropriate adjustments to morning bus pick-up times. We do not expect things to be completely organized until Tuesday of next week. During this adjustment period, students who arrive at the current scheduled time will be supervised and taken care of.
When the new times take full effect we are asking that town students do not arrive before 8:30. We anticipate the arrival time for the first buses to be around 8:35. Although students have a longer lunch break we still encourage them to remain at the school where they can participate in activities in the gym or play games in Mrs. Moriarty’s room. Expectations for high school students over lunch remain the same; we DO NOT want you driving around as this increases the risk of accidents. Please make safe decisions!!
We hope these changes better meet the needs of our students and families. We are looking forward to utilizing the longer lunchtime for intramurals and more lunch clubs. Thank you, and should you have any questions please contact Mrs. Howard at the school. 403-442-3872 or via email at email@example.com.
